SUN HEALTH HEALTHCARE NETWORK DEPLOYS MERU
NEXT-GENERATION WIRELESS LAN SYSTEM TO SUPPORT CRITICAL ADVANCED
VOICE AND DATA APPLICATIONS FOR PATIENT MONITORING AND
MANAGEMENT
Sunnyvale, CA – February 26, 2007
Meru Networks, the leader in infrastructure solutions that
enable the All-Wireless Enterprise, today announced that Sun
Health, a non-profit healthcare network in Arizona, has begun
deployment of a pervasive Meru Wireless LAN (WLAN) System in its
facilities.
Among other benefits, Meru's Wireless LAN System will enable Sun
Health to use advanced clinical applications for patient
monitoring and management throughout their facilities at all
times, while simultaneously supporting Sun Health's investment
in a newly installed wireless voice communications system from
Vocera. Vocera's communications badges, small wearable devices
that enable two-way voice communication, perform optimally with
Meru's unique single channel architecture. With the Meru
solution's voice and data ready infrastructure, there is zero
handoff time between access points, which is essential as
medical personnel move around the facility using the badges and
data devices. This translates into consistent quality of service
and no garbled or dropped calls.
Once fully deployed, the Sun Health wireless network will
provide pervasive wireless access to 1.1 million square feet of
space across two multi-story hospitals and one rehabilitation
facility.
"Our goal is to exploit next-generation technology to better
serve our patients," said Larry Stillman, director and CTO for
Sun Health. "The Meru Wireless LAN System was the best solution
to support all of the critical voice and data applications and
devices that we wanted to deploy now, and it will easily support
those we have planned to implement in the future such as RFID."
The Meru WLAN System enables hospitals and other healthcare
organizations to quickly deploy a pervasive wireless network
that is able to support a high density of users and a wide
variety of applications and devices. The system's unique,
single-channel architecture enables IT teams to install the
network without complex channel planning as well as avoid the
instability of legacy approaches.
"Meru's single-channel architecture is unique in that it allows
organizations like Sun Health to easily enable seamless mobility
to a great number of users, while providing each user fair
access to the advanced applications they need without having to
contend with co-channel interference issues endemic to the other
WLAN technologies," said Ken Creager, senior director of
healthcare solutions for Meru. "In addition, the Meru solution
can support a wide range of devices – whether based on 802.11b,
802.11g or 802.11a – and users will still have consistent
performance across the network."
Sun Health worked with voice and wireless network specialist
Extreme Integration to select and purchase their wireless
solution. "Meru's pervasive Wireless LAN System is ideal for
healthcare environments, as it can support such a wide range of
voice and data device across the network," said Sean Moore,
president and CEO of Extreme Integration. "When paired with
Vocera, the resulting solution is ideal for clinical
environments that are looking to technology to improve patient
care."
