CEDARVILLE UNIVERSITY SELECTS MERU NETWORKS
FOR CAMPUS-WIDE, ALL-WIRELESS NETWORK
Sunnyvale, CA — September 18, 2006
Meru Networks, the global innovation leader in wireless
infrastructure for the All-Wireless Enterprise, today announced
that Cedarville University, an accredited, Christ-centered,
Baptist university of arts, sciences, professional, and graduate
programs, has deployed a campus-wide, all wireless network using
the Meru Networks Wireless LAN System. Cedarville is using
its WLAN to give its faculty, staff and 3,100+ students access
to email, the Internet, library research materials,
administrative functions such as class registration, and the
school's online directories.
Located in Southwestern Ohio on a 400 acre campus, Cedarville
University has had a long-standing commitment to leveraging
technology within its learning environment and for operational
purposes. The University's CedarNet campus-wide network has won
numerous awards. Over 95% of Cedarville's student and faculty
population use its network on a daily basis for a wide variety
of applications that range from standard Internet access to
research and instruction in the classroom to class registration.
With such a high usage environment, Cedarville recognized that
its initial wireless deployment had to be expanded to
accommodate the large number of users, the increasingly dense
environments where users were simultaneously trying to access
the network and to provide mobility and anytime, anywhere access
to its users.
After an extensive evaluation of four major wireless LAN
vendors, the University selected the Meru Networks Wireless LAN
System because of its high capacity, support for high density
environments and ease of management. With Meru's WLAN System,
Cedarville expanded its wireless coverage to include all of its
residence halls, classrooms, open seating areas of the major
academic buildings on campus and all conference centers.
Students can access the Internet, email, library resources,
registration forms and materials and the school's online
directory from their dorm rooms or virtually any gathering spot
on campus, while faculty can prepare course materials,
communicate with students and deliver instruction in the
classroom, using the wireless LAN.
"Cedarville's vast experience with technology and our commitment
to delivering innovation to our learning environment made us a
very demanding customer when it came to selecting a wireless LAN
solution," said David Rotman, associate vice president for
technology and CIO, Cedarville University. "Key objectives for
our campus including improved mobility, ubiquitous access to the
numerous applications offered on our network and lower costs.
The Meru Networks WLAN System was the only platform that could
address all of our requirements."
Although Cedarville's Fall Semester has just begun, already
1,500 student-owned wireless devices are registered on the
wireless LAN and the University is already accommodating average
simultaneous connections of approximately 700 systems. The Meru
WLAN System's Virtual Cell technology is critical to enabling
this kind of high density support. In addition, because
Cedarville is always seeking new ways to integrate technology
into its academic environment, Meru's built-in support for
toll-quality voice was a compelling feature. The University
plans to deploy Voice over WLAN in the near future.
