STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK (SUNY)
FARMINGDALE CHOOSES MERU NETWORKS FOR CAMPUS-WIDE, PERVASIVE
WIRELESS LAN
Sunnyvale, CA — October 11, 2006
Meru Networks, the global innovation leader in wireless
infrastructure for the All-Wireless Enterprise, today announced
that Farmingdale State University of New York (SUNY), has
deployed Meru Networks' Wireless LAN System for a campus-wide,
pervasive wireless network that serves its 6,200 students and
500 faculty and staff. With Meru access points spread across 24
buildings, Farmingdale State is providing its users with a
variety of applications from basic Internet access to real-time
statistics for the athletic department.
Located in Farmingdale, New York, Farmingdale State is a
coeducational, public college dedicated to educating students in
the areas of business, applied arts and sciences, health
sciences and engineering technology.
Farmingdale is one of 64 SUNY colleges and is the only public
college on Long Island to offer a comprehensive base of programs
in the applied sciences and technology. With a large population
of commuter students, the college initially intended to deploy a
wireless LAN to provide convenient Internet access to these
students, but, in the process, discovered that the wireless LAN
could also be used for a wide range of applications in
classrooms and other areas.
The college evaluated solutions from a number of wireless LAN
vendors and ultimately selected Meru's wireless LAN platform
because of its outstanding performance in extremely high density
environments. Farmingdale's unique requirements included
delivering wireless access within a dorm building that has been
constructed from composite material including aluminum. To
provide wireless coverage, Farmingdale deployed Meru access
points spaced only 30 feet apart from each other. Gladson
George, Network Administrator, SUNY Farmingdale, said, "This
high density set-up would not have been possible without Meru's
unique Air Traffic Control technology. With Meru's ability to
coordinate all of the access points in this area and
successfully manage signal contention, we can deliver wireless
access in the most demanding of environments."
Farmingdale State has also discovered unique applications for
its wireless LAN. Their athletic department is using the network
to report and record live game statistics from the college's
athletic fields and gymnasium. "Once we put the wireless LAN in
place, we realized that we could move beyond using the network
simply for convenience," stated Kevin Rooney, Assistant Vice
President for Administrative Services at SUNY Farmingdale. "With
Meru's Wireless LAN System, our network can be managed centrally
and cost-effectively, allowing us to expand the range of
applications we can offer."
"The robust communications and low overhead network management
features of Meru's wireless LAN enable education customers like
Farmingdale State to accommodate both a wide range of
installation scenarios as well as innovative applications that
go far beyond email and Internet access," said Michael Tennefoss,
Vice President of Marketing, Meru Networks. "With Meru's
Wireless LAN System, these customers can deliver
business-critical applications over the network, knowing that
performance, reliability and scalability are a given.
Deployments like Farmingdale State demonstrate the possibilities
of the All-Wireless Campus environment."
